Did You Also Know?

This is a continuation of a previous blog post regarding what many students may not know about the different offices on the UHCL campus.

The last time we blogged, we learned that the Intercultural Student Services supports ALL students from all different backgrounds at UHCL. We discovered that the Health and Disability office offers health education and immunizations for students who travel the world.

Career Services is up next and The Signal discovered a few things that you might want to know about career services especially with the current issues we face in our economy. Charles Crocker, Associate Director of Career Services says:

“We have a resume database called CareerLink that employers use to recruit students.  Companies call us, and provide job descriptions and we are able to bundle resumes of students/alumni who fit the basic qualifications (graduation date, major, specific technical skills) Employers can contact students that they are interested in to interview.  Last semester, we sent resumes to 51 different organizations.

We assist students on graduate school essays, interviews, and curriculum vitas. We also conduct practice interviews also referred to as mock interviews.

Not only do Career Services provide assistance to current students but they also extend a helping hand to UHCL alumni. While you might not be an alumni, The Signal discovered helpful tips from the Library that will assist you on your path to becoming one. Karen Wielhorski, Executive Director of the Alfred R. Neumann Library says:

“Students might not know that librarians are trained researchers and can help them save time and get better grades on their papers.  The Neumann Library has a mobile website for your smart phone or handheld device: m.uhcl.edu/library. Students might not know that Neumann Library makes QR codes available.”

“Quick Reference” , known as QR, are codes intended to be read by simply taking a picture of the code with your mobile device. However a downloadable application is required in order to translate the code to readable text. For more information about QR codes, Call a reference librarian at 281-283-3910.

Karen Wielhorski also mentioned another luxury that the Neumann Library offers to its students that they might not be aware of is, the Neumann Library provides 6000 films on demand downloadable 24/7 and has a DVD collection of feature films, each of which can be checked out for 7 days.

As mentioned in our last blog post, these are just a few facts that students might not know about the offices housed at UHCL. The Signal will offer more “did you know” information about campus offices, but we would love to hear from you. What are some things you would like to know regarding what UHCL has to offer?  Thank you for Blogging.
