Smoking Policy Reminder

UHCL’s smoking policy reminder.

Dear UHCL community:
This email serves as a friendly reminder of UHCL’s Smoking Policy, which was approved by University Council on February 14, 2008.
UHCL is a smoking-restricted campus, except in certain designated smoking areas. All designated smoking areas are marked, along with several non-smoking areas. When construction on SSCB is complete, we will be adding additional non-smoking area signs to SSCB.
Designated smoking areas have been located at each building to provide smokers with a safe area in which to smoke. Receptacles are provided at all of the designated smoking areas for disposal of cigarettes. Please do not dispose of your cigarettes in planters or on the ground. Please do not move those receptacles out of the designated smoking areas. If you are unsure as to whether you are in a designated smoking area, please look for the large blue “Smoking Permitted In This Area” signs, shown below.

While all areas outside of the designated smoking areas are non-smoking, several areas will be specially marked with “No Smoking” signs (as shown below) to reinforce non-smoking in those areas.

As stated in the smoking policy, enforcing the University smoking policy is the shared responsibility of every member of the university community. It is every community member’s responsibility to help educate one another, students, and guests with regard to our smoking policy, including directing them to the appropriate smoking areas. Section 4.1  of the smoking policy states that “The University shall be a smoke free campus except for officially posted designated smoking areas.” Please be reminded that “smoke free campus” includes all green space, parking lots, sidewalks, Alumni Plaza (the area between Bayou and SSCB), and other areas not specifically posted as designated smoking areas. It is important that everyone adhere to our smoking policy by smoking only within those designated smoking areas and refraining from smoking outside those designated areas, including the parking lots.
The designated smoking area by SSCB (the gazebo) is currently unavailable due to construction. Once construction in that area is finished, please use the gazebo for smoking near the SSCB. Until that time, a temporary designated smoking area has been located at the 1600 entrance to Bayou for those who wish to smoke near the SSCB. Also, for those smoking at the Bayou patio area, please note that the designated smoking area is not the entire patio, but rather the covered area marked off by the designated smoking area signs. The section of the patio adjacent to the Forest Room is a non-smoking area.
Attached you will find a map with the locations of all of the designated smoking areas marked with blue dots. Also attached is a copy of UHCL’s current smoking policy. Thank you for your time, and for helping to support our smoking policy.
