UHCL looking for ‘Road Scholars’ for AHA Heart Walk

For one night, a doctor can become a king.

UHCL will be one of many sponsors at this year’s American Heart Association’s Annual 5k Bay Area Heart Walk, Saturday, Oct. 22. The walk, meant to raise awareness and raise funds for research and programs to fight heart disease, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases, carries the added bonus that if 100 walkers commit and walk, UHCL President William Staples will don a King of Hearts costume this fall.

UHCL students, faculty and staff aren’t the only ones invited to the walk.

“Everyone is invited,” said Nichole Eslinger, coordinator for Work/Life Services. “Faculty, staff, students, alumni, the community and their family and friends are welcome to join our UHCL team.”

In addition to walking for a good cause, the first 100 to register will receive a UHCL Road Scholars t-shirt at the walk.

“Our goal in encouraging participation is to promote awareness of the importance of a healthy lifestyle,” Eslinger said. “The walk promotes physical activity as part of a heart-healthy lifestyle to fight heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular diseases.”

The walk begins at 9 a.m. at the Kemah Boardwalk and is free to participate. There is not set amount participants are required to walk, and is completely stroller and dog-friendly.

“These [cardiovascular] diseases are our nation’s No. 1 killer, claiming  nearly 865,000 American lives per year, more than the next four leading causes of death combined,” Eslinger said.
