A Different Type of Boot Camp

UHCL will host a boot camp offered 6 – 8 p.m. Friday Nov. 18 and 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Saturday Nov. 19 in the Garden Room at UHCL, but don’t worry combat boots are optional.

UHCL’s Women’s Studies Students Association offers a new type of boot camp for activists on campus. WSSA’s Feminist Boot Camp offers everyone (students and non-students) the chance to network with fellow activists, non-profit and feminist organizations.

“We decided to do an event like this after I attended Feminist Winter Term in New York City held by Soapbox, Inc., a feminist speaker bureau,” said Morgan Hopkins, general psychology masters student and current WWSA president. “It was a week-long immersion program into what careers in feminist nonprofit organizations look like…I came back to UHCL from winter break raving about the experience.”

Students can choose if they want to attend both days of the event or just one based on their interests. Friday features a screening of the film “Gloria: In Her Own Words” with a discussion lead by Angela Howard after the film. The following day features a career fair where participants are able to network with different organizations. Some of the organizations attending the fair include Bay Area Turning Point, Planned Parenthood-Gulf Coast and Lilith Fund for Reproductive Equality.

The cost for non-WSSA members is $10 for one day or $15 for both days. WWSA members pay a reduced fee of $5 for one day or $10 for both days. Lunch will be provided the second day.

“I hope students gain similar insight that I did from Feminist Winter Term, including the realization that it is possible to do meaningful activism and feminist work while still being able to pay your bills,” Hopkins said. “Even more importantly, I hope activists who may feel isolated realize that there is a strong and thriving activist/feminist community in Houston.”

Students interested in attending WSSA’s Feminist Boot Camp can email wssa.feministbootcamp@gmail.com. Those interested in participating can register before hand or on the actual event days.
