What’s in a name?

Apple, Blanket and North are unique names that celebrities have given to their children. These names will stick with them forever and will help shape who they become.

In the same way, we have the power to name our mascot this week and contribute to his personality. As the face of our school, the UHCL Hawk’s name will give our community and future UHCL students insight into who our current students, alumni, faculty and staff are.

What’s in a name? Why is it important? UHCL wanted to bring a mascot to the school as a start of new beginnings, and now it’s time to name him.  So what personality do we want to give the UHCL Hawk; a fun-filled name that gives students a sense of happiness or a serious name that gives students the feeling of empowerment?

By going in a fun direction, such as the suggested name Talon, the UHCL Hawk can have a one-of-a-kind name that will bring a unique and fun persona to the student body. It will give him spunk, pizazz and energy that radiates to students and inspires them to have fun and stay positive.

Then there is a more serious direction, with the name Hunter, which will give him a personality that shows determination and strength. If we give our mascot this name it will show the students that seriousness and determination can help them to exceed their expectations of themselves.

Which name rings a bell: Talon the Hawk or Hunter the Hawk?  Or maybe you have another idea? You might want the UHCL Hawk to have a female name, so give your suggestions. The choice is yours to find the perfect name for our UHCL Hawk. UHCL students, faculty and staff can vote at www.surveymonkey.com/s/UHCLMascotName!

The voting closes Sept. 17. Visit uhcl.edu/mascot to check the status of our new mascot’s name.
