Clear Lake Traffic Alert concerning Shuttle/747 Move to NASA

The following message is an alert sent out by the UHCL Police Department. If you have any questions, you can contact Chief of Police Paul Willingham at willingham@uhcl.edu.

Please note the following traffic restriction that will take place in Clear Lake next week so that you can limit your inconvenience. On April 28 – 29, a 1,000-foot convoy carrying the former NASA shuttle carrier aircraft (the retrofitted 747 that piggybacked the shuttle around the country) will be transported from its current location at Ellington Field to Space Center Houston. This is an eight-mile trek through the bay area during the nights of April 28-29, arriving the morning of April 30. Roads will close so workers can dismantle streetlights, signs and utility poles as the convoy approaches. The move and subsequent road closures will be as follows:

  • Monday, April 28 from 9:00PM to 4:30AM, Highway 3 (Old Galveston Road) will be closed between the intersections of Scarsdale and NASA Parkway. If you cross Highway 3 on your way home from UHCL that evening, you will need to find an alternate solution.
  • Tuesday, April 29 from 9:00PM to 4:30AM, NASA Parkway will be closed from Highway 3 to Saturn Lane. If you travel NASA Parkway or need to cross it on your way home that evening, you will need to find an alternate solution.

Below is a map of the move. The Red/Yellow dotted line represents the April 28 move. The Blue/Yellow dotted line represents the April 29 move.
