REVIEW: The Walking Dead – Season 5:1

Just in time for Halloween, The Walking Dead has returned to AMC to grace us with the presence of new zombies walkers. The walkers have deteriorated more, the variety of kills have broadened and the use of flashbacks have been integrated. The show is exactly what fans wanted and this season will hold their attention more than the last few seasons.

Last season left off with the gang being held captive at Terminus and lots of questions were left unanswered. These questions were all answered within the first 30 minutes of the show and the audience quickly discovered the true motives of the people of Terminus aka the Termites. Within the first few scenes, viewers quickly learn that the people of Terminus are cannibals and the gang has to escape. They can either be the butcher or the cattle.

This season’s new big bad is an almost hipster-like character named Gareth, who is the leader of the Termites and has a few mommy issues. Executive Producer and Writer of The Walking Dead Scott Gimple refers to the actions of Gareth and the Termites as an “institutional evil.” In the first episode, Rick has already met face-to-face with Gareth and has made the decision for him and his crew. Rick has transformed greatly since the first season, and it seems he will continue to become darker throughout the season. Rick has finally come to terms with his brutality and knows that there are things he needs to do, even if he doesn’t want to. Terminus is a prime example of the fact that good people can turn bad, and Rick and his Ricktatorship is heading in that direction as well.

Carol is the only member of the gang who did not want to go to Terminus, and thankfully, she is there to save the day. Carol takes matters into her own hands and covers herself in walker blood, like in season 1. She hides behind the fences of Terminus with a gun in hand and her eyes on a propane tank. What’s worse than a horde of walkers stampeding into a building? A flaming horde of walkers stampeding into a building.

The only question that was left unanswered is; where is Beth?
