The celebrity conundrum

I love the fall. Holidays are coming up; its football season and all of my favorite television shows are premiering new episodes. However with the fall season comes the fall semester.  This means reading books, writing papers and, pause for effect, learning. I can’t believe I signed up for this again! As a celebrity news junkie, and let’s face it a procrastinator, this always creates somewhat of a conflict of interest for me. I have chapters that I need to read but all Yahoo has to do is post an article about a celebrity and I’m clicking on it. Did Beyoncé just post a new photo on Instagram? What is the latest update on Hank and Kendra? What are Lady Gaga and her dog doing? Today’s society is so immersed in social media that anyone who gets enough views on a YouTube video can become an instant celebrity. We have even resorted to creating shows, i.e. reality television, to generate even more celebrities. Reality shows like The Real Housewives, The Bachelor and Survivor create what we call reality stars out of everyday people every single season.  I know it is frivolous but when Bravo has a Real Housewives of New Jersey marathon I am watching it.  The season one episode in which Teresa flips the table over never gets old.  I know some will say they aren’t the least bit tempted to watch reality television and or read any celebrity gossip but a majority of people, including myself, are otherwise it wouldn’t exist. What does this say about our society as a whole? And more importantly, what would Kanye do?
