JJ Watt: The 100 million dollar man

The Houston Texans inked JJ Watt to a six-year 100 million-dollar contract. 51.8 of that 100 million guaranteed. This contract makes Watt the highest paid defender in league history. Watt has been the most dominant defensive lineman in the league for the past three seasons and deserves to be paid as such.

I believe the Texans found the right man to feature as the face of their franchise for years to come. Watt’s talents on the field are unprecedented, and more importantly, his actions off the field set the right example for this new regime.

Naturally, there are pros and cons that follow with so much of the Texans cap going towards one player, but that’s ok. The pros outweigh the cons. They spent it on the right player.

JJ is the centerpiece of discussions when people talk about the Texans. His reputation around the league is already being considered one of the greatest pass rushers to play this game. He strikes fear into opposing quarterbacks and the poor lineman that have to block him. He also brings a blue-collar attitude into the locker room that will change the atmosphere.

His maturity at this age is astounding. Watt believes his time should be spent taking care of his body and studying film on opposing teams. Most other NFL players at his age only care about the nightlife after the game. That is the aspect that blows me away. He has the world at his fingertips, and still has the discipline to focus on a career that we all know is unfortunately short lived.

Bottom line, the Texans have put their faith in a once in a generation talent. I feel that’s a wise decision and I look forward to watching him dominate on Sundays.
