I have not done my homework this week because I was too busy standing awkwardly at Mardi Gras. I just want to point out that I’m really not a big party person. Never raised that way. Yet there I was, all hyped about Mardi Gras because I was gonna feel like a rebel.

“Mom, can I go to the movies tonight?” I asked my mother.

I have played the old “can I go to the movies?” trick a thousand times. They probably know that I’m lying, but I like to think I’m a rebel. I’d planned to go to Mardi Gras for over a week and each day that passed got me even more excited. I had heard many legends of Mardi Gras since kids in grade school started going through puberty. Mardi Gras beads was the legend that everyone talked about. I guess I shouldn’t call it a legend anymore.

There was so much energy. It was like a parade for older people. I got lost in the crowd too many times. The music was amazing. Danielle Bradbury, winner of The Voice season four performed and it was amazing. The whole after party thing at Mardi Gras really wasn’t my thing. I just sorta stood like a scarecrow in a cornfield.

The parade was the best part of Mardi Gras and it was kept PG. I was cheering for every float that passed by.

Mardi Gras goes on in Galveston for about 2 weeks with the last and actual day of Mardi Gras day being Feb. 17.

Fun Fact: Rex, a small group of businessmen, selected the official Mardi Gras colors in 1872 to honor the visiting Russian Grand Duke Alexis Alexis Alexandrovich Romanoff, whose house colors were purple, green and gold. (mardigrasneworleans.com)

Mardi Gras is an exciting tradition that is worth checking out. I’m not a big party person, but if you’re into that, the after parties are great. If parties aren’t your thing, the parade is still an amazing sight to check out. I’m going to give the Mardi Gras Festival at Galveston four out of five jokers.
