Omicron Delta Kappa is a leadership honor society founded in 1914 at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. The society recognizes academic achievements and campus leadership in the five phases of campus life: scholarship, athletics, campus or community service, journalism and mass media, as well as the creative and performing arts. The nearly 300 active circles across the United States are committed to developing campus leaders into future leaders of their own communities. Members of Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) exhibit exemplary character, responsible leadership, scholarship, fellowship, and dedication to democratic ideals.

ODK is one of four honor societies listed in the Honor Society Caucus, along with Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, and Phi Kappa Phi.
The purpose of these societies is to celebrate academic excellence and integrity of character. Our founders believed that superior performance in studies, leadership, and research over a sustained period is worthy of recognition. The mission of ODK is to identify, honor, and develop leaders in college and community life, and to encourage collaboration among students, faculty, staff and alumni to advance leadership.

The Hilary Jo Karp Circle of ODK was installed on March 11, 1984. Many great leaders have passed through the circle at UHCL. Several of our campus faculty and staff can boast about their membership in ODK. The Spring 2015 semester proved to be very successful, with a record number of inductees. This semester ODK plans to be active both on and off campus, encouraging collegiate and alumni members to participate in this prestigious organization and its related activities. Next month, the society will host an Alumni Mixer and Fundraiser at BJ’s Brew House on Oct. 8 from 5 p.m.-8 p.m. at the location on Bay Area Blvd. in Clear Lake. ODK also plans to participate in the Bay Area/Galveston County Walk to End Alzheimer’s on Saturday, Oct. 10 beginning at 9 a.m. at Stewart Beach in Galveston. The Hilary Jo Karp Circle is also planning to collaborate with other honor societies on campus, such as The National Society of Leadership and Success in order to further develop our member’s leadership and professional development.

The process is open to upperclassmen, graduate students and honorable faculty and staff. In order to be selected a student must be represented in the top 35% of his or her academic school, such as the school of Human Sciences and Humanities. If you meet this criterion, you will receive an e-mail recognizing your success, inviting you to apply to become a member of the honor society. If you are interested in joining or have any further questions about Omicron Delta Kappa please e-mail the Vice President of Programming, Wayne Sallee, at waynesalle@yahoo.com or President, Holley Hood, at hoodh1403@uhcl.edu. The Hilary Jo Karp Circle of ODK is currently seeking applicants for the positions of Secretary and SGA rep. If you are interested in either of these positions or have questions pertaining to their duties, send an e-mail correspondence to President, Holley Hood. We hope that everyone is having a wonderful and productive semester, we look forward to seeing you at our events!
