‘Scream Queens’ slashes the audience

I have not done my homework this week because I was busy binge watching the new television series “Scream Queens.” It seems like the new genre horror/comedy is picking up in speed and that’s not a bad thing. “Scream Queens” is a show centered around a sorority known as Kappa Kappa Tau and its diverse members, whom are all being hunted by the school’s mascot the Red Devil. The characters within the show are hilarious and dramatic to the fullest. There are a lot of characters in the show; after all, the Red Devil does do a lot of killing, so you never know if your favorite character will make it to the end.

“If any of you die while protecting a sister, you’re allowed to skip the rest of Hell Week.” This is one of the many iconic lines this show has to offer. “Scream Queens” has many well-known celebrities such as Emma Roberts, Nick Jonas, Ariana Grande, Keke Palmer and many more. I never would have thought horror and comedy could mix well together, but it’s a genius idea. The audience gets the horror but the comedy lightens up the mood. “Scream Queens” is a genre of honor called “camp,” which simply means they over exaggerate certain scenes to the point where it becomes comical. Some other examples of this are “Scream,” “The Evil Dead,” etc.

The creators of the show Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuk, and Ian Brennan know how to grab the audience’s attention with each and every episode. It centers around Chanel Oberlin, played by Emma Roberts, who is the biggest B word in the show. She is also a fan favorite from the horror world with a filmography including “American Horror Story” and “Scream 4.” The show includes many allusions to other popular shows and movies such as “The Shining” and “Animal House.”

There was a ton of publicity leading up to the premiere of the show and the hype lived up to my standards. I don’t think I have ever laughed so hard at a TV show. I am constantly chuckling away at the hilarious moments that the show has to offer. In one second I’m laughing but in the other I’m clutching my seat with anticipation. Seeing a deaf girl get her head mowed off while singing Taylor Swift’s “Shake it Off” is another iconic death scene.

I find myself looking forward to Tuesdays more than usual because of the show. Homework can wait as always – nothing will stand in the way of me and my new favorite bae.
