‘The truth is still out there’ and it’s probably aliens again

With the upcoming release of “The X-Files” mini-series in January, I thought this would be a good time to bring up the topic of David Duchovny and aliens. I would also like to mention that I have spent the past few nights months watching “The X-Files.”

For those of you who have not seen the show, “The X-Files” follows two FBI detectives that investigate supernatural, paranormal and unexplained events. The aloof, Special Agent Fox Mulder, portrayed by David Duchovny, and his skeptic partner, Special Agent Dana Scully, played by Gillian Anderson, complement one another throughout the series because of their differences in thought, personality and height. They open each other’s eyes; one to science, the other to the supernatural.

As I have been watching the show, I realize that the show is timeless. Yes, their phones are gigantic, hairstyles are ridiculous and Scully’s shoulder pads are even more ridiculous, but generational fashion trends aside, the story is still intriguing. The writers for the show never seemed to run out of material for the show like they do nowadays.

In an interview with The Smithsonian, Chris Carter said that he got his inspiration from shows from his childhood such as “Alfred Hitchcock Presents,” “Night Gallery,” and “Outer Limits.” Vince Gilligan, whose name some might recognize from “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul,” got his start writing for “The X-Files.” Other famous writers such as Stephen King and William Gibson have also co-written episodes for the series.

The show ran from 1993 to 2002 and had two movies. Let me start by saying that I have not seen every episode, that is why I am going back to watch all of them – or at least attempting it. I think I’m on season six out of nine.

I’ve been brushing up on my “The X-Files” knowledge to prepare for the upcoming Geeks Who Drink pub quiz on Jan. 23. I usually go to Neil’s Bahr to play trivia, but I’ll make an exception for Mulder and Scully.  The special event quiz, “The Truth is Out There: An X-Files Quiz,” is at 3 p.m. at Revelry on Richmond. Don’t forget to catch the brand new “The X-Files” mini-series Jan. 24 on FOX.
