Mix it up: Don’t stick with a stale workout routine

Workout routines, we all try them, right? I, for one, absolutely love working out. It is a huge part of my life and always will be. I worked at a gym for seven years and have now worked for a supplement company for the past four years. I have experienced failing routines and successful routines.

Working out hasn’t always been this easy for me though. When I was in high school, I played every sport imaginable. Going from someone teaching you how to workout to relying solely on yourself can be a quick wake-up call. After graduating high school it’s like I ran into a brick wall. What do I do when I don’t have a routine anymore? I’ve gone through so much trial and error it is unreal. Working out alone you can lead to boredom and a loss of motivation because there is no accountability. I go to the Fitness Center at UHCL regularly and see the same students doing the same workout routine. The key is mixing it up and getting information from the right resources.

Body weight exercises are one of the safest routines because they use natural movements. Asking an experienced certified trainer is much safer because anyone can get certified online without any experience at all. Think of the basics such as: squats, pull-ups, push-ups, abdominal exercises and getting in some cardio like walking or, if you can, running. All of these workouts can be done without a gym, but while you’re on campus you can go to the Fitness Center. They have all the equipment you need and they always offer a helping hand.

Remember to always have patience. Only you can make the changes, but you don’t have to do it alone.
