UHCL Art Gallery highlights BFA students’ work

The UHCL Art Gallery unveiled its new exhibit April 14 at the opening reception for the Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition. Graduating art student pieces are on display and will be up through May 12.

The exhibition was juried by Clint Willour, curator of the Galveston Arts Center. Each student, including BFA students graduating and those who graduated in December, was allowed to submit up to five works for consideration using a variety of mediums. 533 people attended the event.

Jeff Bowen, coordinator of audience development for the UHCL Art Gallery, said he was very pleased by the number count.

“This is a record opening reception for us,” Bowen said. “The previous record was last year’s Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibition opening with 393 people.”

David Gonzalez, art major and award recipient, said he enjoyed the event and was pleased to see how many other artists came. Gonzalez also stated that it was one of the best BFA shows he has attended.

“Multiple artists brought their best work to delight us with their talent,” Gonzalez said.

The UHCL Alumni Association awarded the Art Gallery a grant of $500 in support of the exhibition. The money was used for prizes awarded by the juror. The Saint Arnold Brewing Company donated eight cases of beer for the event.

The award winners are as follows:

o   1st place: Megan Cash – for her body of work
