REVIEW: ‘The Nutcracker’ presents flashbacks of childhood memories

The Bay Area Houston Ballet (BAHB) twirled their way into the Bayou Theater at the University of Houston-Clear Lake this December with their version of “The Nutcracker.”

Although this was not my first time watching the classic performance, it definitely felt like it was. I first watched “The Nutcracker” at the age of six, but I never remembered what it was about. However, just a few scenes into the BAHB performance, I began having flashbacks to my childhood.

The set up that BAHB put together for “The Nutcracker” brought the whole show to life. From the gorgeous lighting to the music and dance, the entire performance was a masterpiece. In addition, the production team and cast did a great job of transitioning between scenes.

Now, we all know that “The Nutcracker” can hit some ‘boring’ scenes since there is no dialogue. Surprisingly enough, I was still entertained the whole time. Due to the lack of dialogue, it can be confusing trying to understand the story happening on stage. It is easy to get lost in between all the dancing and music. My best tip if you are planning on watching any live version of “The Nutcracker” is to do a little bit of research on the play before attending.

Overall, this is a great ballet to attend during the holiday season that is family-friendly and one you are sure to get some laughs out of too.
