UHCL searches for a new president

A UHCL Presidential Search Committee was appointed Nov. 7.

Three forums were held by the UHCL Presidential search committee Jan. 31 and Feb.1 that were open to the whole UHCL community. People who attended the forums had the opportunity to talk about what qualities they would like to see from the new president, following the retirement of President William Staples.

Angie Montelongo, director of Orientation and New Student Programs, attended the open forums on campus and noted what those who spoke up wanted to see from the new president.

These ideal qualifications include having a specific vision of expansion, experience with alumni boards and donors, enrollment strategies moving forward, having satellite campuses, working with non-traditional students, being accessible and relatable, well-developed fiscal management, the promotion of the advancement of minorities in the workplace and the promotion of student success outside of the classroom.

Montelongo also said that it was emphasized that candidates should have proof or examples of demonstrating these qualities in their career.

“I think the campus has been pretty well informed on the process in the search for the new president,” said Montelongo. “We know who is on the search committee, there is a website specific to this search and the timeline was also shared at the open forums.”

The Presidential Search Committee is also working with Greenwood/Asher & Associates, Inc. search firm consultants for advice during the hiring process.

The deadline for applications was Feb. 10 and the Presidential Search Committee will start interviewing candidates Feb. 24.

“Once the finalists for the position are determined by the committee, this information will be posted to the Presidential Search website and shared with the UHCL community,” said Richard Walker, vice president of student affairs and enrollment services and member of the search committee. “Faculty, staff and students will have an opportunity to attend an open forum and reception with the finalists. It is expected that the finalists will be named by mid-March, and they will visit campus between late March and April.”
