CAB mines a gem of a trip to the Houston Museum of Natural Science

Recently the Campus Activities Board (CAB) hosted a full-fledged field trip where students were given the opportunity to experience all the Houston Museum of Natural Science amenities free of charge. As a member of CAB, I decided to volunteer for the field trip so I could enjoy it while actually helping out.

The group that I was in charge of supervising was stationed in the SSCB student orgs room. I was in charge of signing everybody in and giving them his or her bands. These bands helped to keep track of the students and make sure they receive their free lunch and limited edition CAB t-shirt. Once everyone was signed in, we ran through the itinerary and ground rules for the trip and we were on our way!

We traveled to the museum in two fancy Coach Buses and when we arrived everybody went off to do their own thing. The general exhibits were free to the public during the time we went, so there was a wide array of displays to choose from. The exhibits on Texas history, Mayan culture, chemistry, and animals were the most popular, but I found the rare gem exhibit the most intriguing. The room was very dark and the gems were illuminated by strategic lighting that made the crystals sparkle. It was really cool to see all the different gems and see how/where they were made.

On the bus to the museum, the coordinator of the whole field trip told us that it would be in everyone’s best interest to try to learn as much information as possible from the exhibits. He said that there “may or may not” be an online trivia quiz, in which the winner would get a free CAB goodie bag. Even though I wasn’t eligible to win this prize, since I am a CAB member, I tried to go through all the exhibits to see how well I did, compared to everyone else. Long story short, I wouldn’t have even come close to winning the prize, even if I was eligible!

All in all, the CAB Field Trip was a great experience. The fact that CAB was able to take over 100 students off campus and make it back all in one piece was amazing in itself! Now that CAB has accomplished this, the possibilities for future events are endless. CAB is already looking into planning a trip to the Houston Zoo next semester, so be on the lookout for future events!
