The car enthusiast community of car clubs, meets and shows is a local way to meet fellow car fans and see amazing automobiles. Car meets and car shows are planned by clubs and local organizations as a means for local car owners and club members to show off their wheels and entertain crowds. Some car meets are specific to a type of vehicle, classic, sport, jeep, while others accept entries from classic to suped-up golf carts.

Robert Chapman, head of Psychotic Dreams car club, explains that art and family bring these enthusiasts, and hundreds more like them, together in one spot.

“Car enthusiasts gravitate towards cars because they are fun to work on, and it is a piece of art to show off,” Chapman said. “Most car clubs are a family and take care of each other.”

The Kemah Car Meet and Show has been meeting every Saturday at 507 FM 2094 in Kemah, TX, the Home Depot parking lot, for several years. The Kemah Car Meet and Show, a subset of the greater Houston Car Cruise group, is held every Saturday weather permitting. Classic cars, foreign sports cars and Jeeps are just a few of the automobile attractions that bring in crowds of all ages.

Cheney Collier, attendee of the Kemah Car Meet and Show and car enthusiast, discovered one of these meets by pure happenstance.

“[I was] just driving by Home Depot in my ’73 Mercedes and wanted IHOP,” Collier said. “I just so happened to see cars lined up everywhere like in a movie. It went from classics to modern day vehicles. It was awesome.”

Collier has been attending car meets for more than four years, and he particularly enjoys the atmosphere and community they offer.

“You can just come up and park,” Collier said. “That’s why I like the Kemah Car Meet and Show, because it’s not like where they have awards or any of that. It’s just the community getting together to enjoy some cars.”

Patricia Mojica, avid attendee of the Kemah Car Meet and Show and car enthusiast, says her love for cars brings her there almost every weekend. Mojica says she loves attending the meet and having the opportunity to show off her Nissan 350Z.

“I’m a car junkie, have been all my life,” Mojica said. “My brother owns a ’68 Mustang and a 2009 Corvette.”

Mojica and her brother, along with Mojica’s daughter, attend the show as often as they can.

“We all just love cars,” Mojica said. “The people are really nice there.”

Fireworks and Cars, another car meet featuring local car clubs, hosts car shows that end in a firework display at 211 FM 2094 Road, an Office Depot parking lot in Kemah.

Chapman hosts the Fireworks and Cars meet, has been to various meet ups in the Clear Lake area.

“Each and every meet I go to is fun and entertaining,” Chapman said. “My car club, Psychotic Dreams, is a car club with all makes and models of cars, trucks and bikes. We participate in most any meet that is out there.”

Chapman reiterates the openness of the car meets and car shows.

“Most of the meets are free and open to the public,” Chapman said. “Sometimes, with the nature of a certain car event, the organizers have to charge to recoup some of the cost. The only time we do a members-only event is when it has to do with club business.”

Jeep enthusiasts also make a big showing at events in the area.

South Coast Jeep Club, active for four years, has events from San Leon to central Texas. Its events award “Best in Show” Jeeps and entertain guests with its rugged works of art.

Skyline Jeep Club, based in downtown Houston, throw events around the Heights, Midtown and Montrose. There is a car meet and a car club for every make and model in Houston.

Car clubs and car enthusiasts are expected at the Street Dreams Car Show at Crazy Alan’s Swamp Shack in Kemah on Aug 5. Sponsored by Precision Porting, the car show will combine cajun food with car enthusiasts and will feature trophies for “Best in Show,” “Best Truck,” “Best Sports Car,” “Best Import,” “Best Street Rod,” “Best Custom,” and three levels of “Best Antique.” The show will go on from 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
