Campus Recreation hosts general information sessions

The Department of Campus Recreation and Wellness is hosting general information sessions regarding the new department beginning Thursday, Oct. 12. Each session will last one hour and will inform attendees about the new department, construction updates, construction timelines, policies and procedures regarding membership, new programming, and updates on staffing for both students and professionals. The Department of Campus Recreation and Wellness will also be taking questions, comments and concerns during each session.

“The culture of campus is going to change significantly,” said Brian Mills, director for Campus Recreation and Wellness. “The rec center will be a social center for students and faculty, and they will want to come back to campus when classes are over.”

The sessions are free to all who wish to attend, and they will be hosting another series of sessions in the spring 2018 semester.

Mills clarified that membership rates, plans, policies or registration paperwork will not be finalized until March 2018.

“This is more than a building or a rec center, it’s a means to build connections between students, faculty and the community, and those connections will stay with them for decades,” Mills said.

UHCL broke ground on the new $38.2 million Recreation and Wellness Center in March 2017. The UHCL website states that the facility will serve as the base of operations for the Exercise and Health Sciences program, the Fitness and Human Performance program and will host general instruction classrooms and recreational activities for students, faculty and staff.

A livestream of the construction can be viewed here, and the building will house a multitude of features including an elevated indoor running track, two regulation-sized basketball courts, and open and private study spaces for students.
