Although Comicpalooza 2018 was my fourth time attending a comic convention, it was the first time I went to all three days of such an event. Rather than spend a few hours on a Saturday exploring the exhibit hall, I decided to take my experience this year to another level.

Aside from the awesome artwork, the additions to my Funko Pop collection and the ability to see Tom Holland in person, I walked away with some survival tips. Not everyone will feel so good about attending three-days worth of Comicpalooza, but in the event one is, consider these pieces of advice.

Gear up the search engine

Sure, conducting research, in general, isn’t necessarily fun and can cause instant mental fatigue. However, in order to truly get the most out of the Comicpalooza experience, you’ll need to get your Google on.

First, head to the Comicpalooza website to see what information you can find regarding guests, panels and exhibitors. If you’re looking to get an autograph or photo with an announced guest, check to see how much that dream will cost. Then, ask yourself, “is the dream worth that much?”

Lastly, if getting a hotel room and guaranteed parking is something you’re contemplating, compare prices and make the reservations early. Also, if you intend to make purchases from vendors, invest in a tote bag or backpack.

Caution: Tons of people and walking ahead

If Comicpalooza continues to be held at the George R. Brown Convention Center, know that there will be a lot of walking involved. Additionally, if you’re anything like me and view walking long distances as something to avoid, then recognize that feeling will likely not fade away after the comic con.

With three floors filled with things to do, it’s a safe bet that you will find a few hundred other attendees roaming about. While the image of a crowd is intimidating, you are bound to find those interested in the same fandoms you are.

Once you’re able to get a copy of the Comicpalooza schedule and map, either through the mobile app, website or event program, a plan can be made. Creating a personal plan will not only help you maximize your experience but also limit the amount of walking back and forth.

Plans save time, energy and money

It’s finally here, the first day of Comicpalooza and you’re ready to take on the con! Before rushing in, take some time to scout the scene and see where things are located.

Take note of where the bathrooms, food vendors and electronic charging stations are. Then use some time to get familiar with the third-floor room locations as the Q&A sessions and panels will be held there.

If the need to check out the exhibitor hall immediately sets in upon arrival, do so, but try and refrain from spending money early. There are tons of vendors with cool things to purchase, but what might seem like a steal at one place might be sold for even less three rows over.

Also worthy to note, some vendors will have sales going on during the last day of the convention. The final day of Comicpalooza 2018 also happened to be the one where my inner child smiled, yet my bank account cried.

Minus the walking and self-inflicted wound to my budget, three-days of Comicpalooza was a great experience. No matter how big of a geek one considers oneself, there is something for everyone.
