Leading the Way for New Students
When a semester ends a new one is set to begin, which means new students and New Student Orientation. The Student Life Office holds Orientation each semester to help new UHCL students find their way around campus, and learn more about on-campus organizations.
The Student Life Office counts on students to volunteer as Orientation Leaders to help make Orientation a success.

Via Colori: Art for a Cause
Remember getting your box of chalk out on a sunny day and drawing all over the driveway when you were a kid. Well imagine a whole city drawing on the streets of Houston all for charity. Via Colori is an annual festival taking place from Saturday Nov. 19 to Nov. 20 at Sam Houston Park in Downtown Houston. The festival features live music and art for people of all ages, and admission is free.
New to the popular Houston festival this year is the Via Colori Street Scene. This festival within a festival takes place on Sunday at 4 p.m. and attendees can stroll through the festival and listen to music while sampling beer, wine and food from Carrabba’s. There will also be a festival-wide scavenger hunt allowing participants of the Street Scene to compete for prizes. Admission is $20 and all the proceeds go to The Center for Hearing and Speech, who puts on the festival every year.

A Different Type of Boot Camp
UHCL will have a boot camp offered 6 – 8 p.m. on Friday Nov. 18 and 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Saturday Nov. 19 in the Garden Room at UHCL, but don’t worry combat boots are optional.
UHCL’s Women’s Studies Students Association is offering a new type of boot camp for activists on campus. WSSA’s Feminist Boot Camp offers everyone (students and non-students) the chance to network with fellow activists, non-profit and feminist organizations.

2011 Ballunar Liftoff Festival \ Clear Lake \ family activities

Enjoy the weekend in the Clear Lake area and attend the RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival. The event is taking place this weekend, Oct. 21-23 at the NASA/Johnson Space Center.
The event is fun for the whole family. Spectators can watch hot air balloons fill the sky and enjoy the local cuisine. “The RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival is a great way to enjoy the great Fall weather outdoors, and features hot air balloons from all over the country,” said Mike Sumerlin, RE/MAX of Texas Marketing Director. “Unlike other festivals where admission is based on individual pricing, the RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff Festival is only $10 per carload making it the best Fall festival value in the greater area.”
The festival also includes live music as well as arts & crafts exhibits.
“There’s something for everyone at the RE/MAX Ballunar Liftoff festival; we’ve got great live music from the Fried Ice Cream Band and Curtis Braly on Friday and Saturday; we’ve got a NASA Johnson Space Center open house on Saturday; we’ve got Radio Disney and performances from Sonny the Birdman and Texas Snakes and more,” said Sumerlin.

Dancing for Education \ IISS \ UHCL
IISS Dancing for Education Event
Join the Office of Intercultural and International Students Services as they host their first “Dancing for Education” fundraiser. The event’s goal is to raise funds for the celebrating Our Elders scholarship project. The event takes place Saturday, Oct. 22. Starting at 7 p.m. with free salsa classes and then free open dancing from 8-10:30 p.m. in Atrium 1 of the bayou building.
“It’s a fundraiser, but at the same time it’s a way to promote diversity through music, and then also promote health,” said Imelda Estrada, Program Assistant for IISS and Celebrating Our Elders. “The Celebrating Our Elders scholarship has been active at UHCL for 18 years and this fundraiser is a great way to benefit the scholarship.”
The event is open to students, faculty, staff and the community. There will be music provided by a DJ, food and a raffle. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.
