Saralene Tapley, artist of acrylic paintings, was on campus as part of the Visual Arts Scholastic Event, which was held in the Bayou Building April 9-10.
VASE, which was held on the UHCL campus April 9-10, is sponsored by the Texas Art Education Association and gives high school students the opportunity to bring artwork created in their art classes to be evaluated by jurors.
Medals were awarded to students who received superior rating in each division. Students’ artwork is currently on display in the Bayou Building through May 13.

“Building America” and “Life in America” by Joe Kagle
The Lone Star Art Expo opened Feb. 5 and features artwork created by art professors from Lone Star College in Kingwood. Among the artists present at the opening were Joe Kagle, Margarita Cole, Rebecca Riley, Mari Omori, and Corey Cryer. The artwork consists of paintings, sculptures, pottery, photos and handmade paper sculptures. The exhibit will be displayed until March 25.

With the Houston skyline as a backdrop, the 13th annual Bayou City Art Festival Downtown took place Oct. 10-11, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., along the streets of Bagby, Walker and McKinney.
The outdoor art gallery is a family-friendly atmosphere that Art Colony Association, Inc. produces every year. The festival showcased more than 300 artists in 19 different media formats including photography, painting, furniture, glass and textiles.
“Bayou City Art Festival Downtown has earned national and international recognition,” said Susan Farb Morris, of Susan Farb Public Relations. “This year, the festival was ranked the number three art festival in the U.S. by AmericanStyle Magazine readers and ranked number 10 in the country by Sunshine Artist magazine. In addition, the festival has garnered gold, silver and bronze Pinnacle awards from the International Festivals & Events Association as well as top awards from the statewide Texas Festivals & Events Association. This festival broke all records for artists’ applications with 850 artists from around the U.S. and Canada vying for 300 spots in the juried festival.” Continue Reading

The Art Alliance Center at Clear Lake, located at 2000 NASA Parkway, is currently hosting “Flotsam & Jetsam: Artists Respond to Hurricane Ike.”
“To encourage creative interpretation of the theme and to diversify the art and the materials used to make it, we have tilted our August exhibition about Hurricane Ike, Flotsam & Jetsam,” said curator Debra Kendrick.
Flotsam is debris found floating or that has washed ashore, and jetsam is cargo cast overboard to lighten the load. Artists had the choice to use the hurricane as the theme or subject of their work, or they could use the “flotsam churned up by the storm or the jetsam cast off by its victims to create something fresh form all the devastation,” Kendrick stated.
