“Love Your Body Day” at UHCL

As a part of Love Your Body Day on Oct. 20, sponsored by Intercultural and International Student Services and the Student Life Office, UHCL will be having a clothing drive to donate clothing items to the Bay Area Turning Point.

BATP is a non-proft organization that helps those in need in our area get back on their feet in their time of need by providing a variety of services for the area including food, shelter, education and crime prevention.

Bring any clothing items you don’t need and give them to someone in need.  BATP accepts clothes in good condition in adult and children’s sizes for all seasons of the year.

Love Your Body Day has several events that will take place. In additon to events listed below there will be games, crafts, informational displays and more.

At noon there will there will  be a poetry jam, “Loving The Self, Celebrating The Body,” which will be an open mic session.  Shreerekha Subramanian, assistant professor of humanities, will be the master of ceremonies. E-mail Subramanian to reserve your spot to read at subramanian@uhcl.edu.

Some of the other events that will take place are:

1-2 p.m. – “Care for your Body Through Nutrition,” Denise Cazes, instructor of humanties for UHCL.

2-3 p.m. – “Social Construction of Beauty and the Dangers of Plastic Surgery,” with speakers Ashton Tucker and Tonya Tipton.

3-4 p.m.- “Fitness and Nutrition,” with speaker Cary Hair II, coordinator of health, wellness and recreation.

4-5 p.m. – Screening for the film “Killing Them Softly 4,” which will discuss how advertisers distort the ideals of femininity.

Come out for all that “Love Your Body Day”  has to offer on Oct. 20, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Bayou Atrium I and the Garden Room. All events will take place in one of the two areas.
