After watching “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” there were tons of theories floating around the internet about the film and its characters. I have spent the last few nights pondering the possible theories surrounding the character of Rey.

Before watching the movie, I had my speculations about the new characters, their origins and their significance in the franchise. Let me say I was completely right about some of them and completely wrong about a few of them. Good job J. J. Abrams, you’ve done it again! After watching the movie, I did what all die-hard “Star Wars” fans do and checked the internet and Wookieepedia for theories about “The Force Awakens,” specifically Rey.

I grew up watching the original trilogy (Episodes IV-VI) and idolized Leia because she was the strong, female heroine of the movies. When the prequel trilogy came out (Episodes I-III), Padme was the fearless leading lady in the movie who was also pretty good with a blaster. In “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Rey is the lone wolf who turns from scavenger to brave warrior. The franchise always has a a strong female character in the story and Rey is no exception. The film is pretty much a modern version of  “A New Hope” but follows Rey instead of Luke; this is Rey’s origin story. That is another blog for another day but click here if you want to know more about that subject.

*Spoilers ahead*

The ending of the movie leads you to believe that Rey is Luke’s daughter due to her flashback, the lightsaber and her abilities to use the Force. This is the most commonly believed theory going around the web and probably the right one. The second theory going around is that Rey and Kylo Ren are twins. This could be true but aren’t twins supposed to skip a generation? Anyway, I like to stir the pot, or disturb the Force, and search for completely off the wall theories and I think I have found the one.

I believe that Rey is Obi-Wan Kenobi’s granddaughter. I am not saying this because Obi-Wan is my all-time favorite “Star Wars” character, but because it is completely plausible. The most obvious reason is because her clothes are the exact same as Kenobi’s. When Rey touches the lightsaber, she hears Obi- Wan’s voice. Even though the lightsaber is a Skywalker saber, Obi- Wan was in possession of the lightsaber for a longer amount of time than both of the Skywalkers. Through this flashback, the audience knows that Rey is waiting for someone on Jakku; her family, not Luke. There is a rumored Obi-Wan Kenobi solo movie that might cover this topic and explain what he was really doing all those years he was in hiding.

It’s hard to say exactly where Rey came from but we do know that the force is very strong with her and she will only get more powerful. If she is a Kenobi and she is trained by a Skywalker I think this will bring a nice balance to the movies and possibly the Force. Who knows, I could be completely wrong and she could be a Calrissian.
