One blogger’s journey into the many hearts of Houston

When I was a kid, I thought journalists were magicians. Or secret agents. I thought they went on all the best adventures to bring people information, insightful perspectives. And every time I saw them on TV or in person, somewhere around their neck or on their shirt was that little white rectangle with big bold words:

PRESS PASS

That was the magician’s flying carpet, the secret agent’s super cool, totally inconspicuous super-car. With that badge they could go anywhere and talk to anyone. Presidents, rock stars, castles, and war zones; nothing was truly off limits.

Reality rarely lives up to childhood fantasy, but now I have the opportunity to share with you those burning questions behind closed doors in hard to reach places. I’ll take you on journeys you never thought possible, bring you vantage points previously unseen and grant you access to events you had no idea were going on right under your nose.

In case you were wondering who I am and what I’m doing here, my name is Trey. I’ve written some fiction and a few non-fiction pieces for The Signal, and I just started working here as a Live Reporter. I’m a graduate student in history, and I managed to get a bachelor’s degree last December in the same subject. I’ve been writing and running around Houston for a full decade now, and I’ve had a few of these stories and works inspired by the things I’ve done and seen published online and in print. My most recent piece for The Signal prior to employment was a report on a Trump protest outside a wealthy donor’s house. It was incredibly hot and loud outside, and I absolutely loved it.

Some things I’ll write for this blog will be objective. You’ll get the facts and a good 360 view of the area around whatever it is I’m covering. Some things will be subjective – you’ll see it through my eyes and hear it through my ears. I’ll be honest about what I think of it. Most of my stories will be somewhere in between. I’ll do my best to give you perspectives from the fly on the wall to the eye of the storm. You can expect everything from concerts to fashion, events and grand openings, and if I can swing it I’ll give you a window to the real underground of what’s going on in our widespread metropolis. Rest assured, I’ll get you where we need to go.
