Classical, hip-hop fusion Black Violin coming to UHCL

University of Houston-Clear Lake’s Cultural Art Series welcomes Black Violin Sunday, April 9, 7:30 p.m., at the Bayou Theater, 2700 Bay Area Blvd., Houston. Black Violin offers a distinctive fusion of classical, jazz, funk and hip-hop musical genres, which has gained the duo of Wil B. and Kev Marcus international acclaim,.

Violist Wilner Baptiste (Wil B.) and violinist Kevin Sylvester (Kev Markus) met in a magnet school for performing arts in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., received classical training in separate colleges and later reunited as Black Violin. In 2005, the duo became a breakout-hit at the legendary Apollo Theater.

Black Violin has shared stages with Kayne West, Aerosmith and Tom Petty. The duo has collaborated creatively with Alicia Keys as well as rappers Wu-Tang Clan and Wyclef Jean. Their 2015 release of the major-label album “Stereotypes” debuted as No. 1 on Billboard’s Classical Crossover Chart and No. 4 on Billboard’s R&B Chart. With a special emphasis on educational outreach, Black Violin has performed to more than 100,000 students in North America and Europe in the past 12 months.
