SGA meeting – March 21, 2017

The meeting started with fund requests from student organizations.

  • The American Dental Society (ADS) requested funds for two events. The first one was to attend Texas Mission of Mercy in Kerrville, TX, March 24. The event is a mobile dental clinic that offers free dental services and allows ADS members to get hands-on experience.
  • ADS also requested funds for world health day April 7. Health-related speakers will attend and talk about their field of work.
  • Sigma Tau Delta is going to their international convention in Louisville, Kentucky, March 28 through April 1.
  • All three fund requests were approved.

The Executive Council gave their weekly reports.

  • The council took a straw poll with the people in attendance of the new smoking policy. 28 people voted for changing UHCL to become a smoke-free campus. 13 people voted against the policy change.
  • The student organization/student leader of the month will be announced at the March 28 meeting. The meeting will take place in the garden room for the president’s luncheon at 11 a.m.

The Executive Council also went over old news.

  • The Executive Council applications now have a new timeline. The council said they will send a mass email to all students.
  • The deadline for applications is April 12 and the vote for the amendment change will take place April 11.
  • Candidates will be verified and contacted April 12 through April 14.
  • Elections, speeches and presentations will take place April 18.
  • Online voting will be available from April 18 through April 24.
  • SGA will hold a “special session” April 25 to announce the results of the elections.

Student organizations gave their announcements.

  • Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) is having a bake sale March 23 in the Student Services Building lobby from 1-3 p.m. Proceeds will go towards lunches of love charity.
  • Pre-Health and Science Association (PHSA) is hosting a blood drive March 21 and March 22 in Atrium II from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Communication and Digital Media Association (CDMA) will have their annual grilled cheese sale April 11 after the SGA meeting.
  • Chess and Checkers club has meetings every Monday from 2-4 p.m. and Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. in the student organizations room.
  • Campus Activities Board (CAB) will have jeopardy night March 22 in the garden room from 5:30-7 p.m.
  • CAB will host the outdoor movie, “Guardians of the Galaxy.” The event will take place March 31, 7-10:30 p.m. by the UHCL letters and the movie will start at 8 p.m.
  • CAB will have their first field trip April 20. They are going to the Houston Museum from 1:30-6 p.m. The trip is free and the organization is only taking the first 50 students who register.

The meeting ended with general announcements.

  • The Office of Student Diversity, Equity and Inclusion announced that their Women’s HERstory spoken word event is canceled.
  • Careers Services will have a finance networking night March 21 in the garden room from 5-7 p.m. The Texas job fair will take place March 28 at the University of St. Thomas from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Students who are interested must sign up to ride on the shuttle and put down a 10 dollar deposit. The deposit will be handed back once everyone is on the shuttle. The majors and minors fair will be in the Bayou Building March 30 1- 3 p.m.
  • The Office of Student Diversity, Equity and Inclusion will hold their cultural extravaganza March 25 at 5 p.m.
  • SLICE will host Time and Stress Management March 23 from 5-7 p.m. They will also hold a social justice dinner after “Hidden Figures” plays in the Student Services Building Lecture Hall March 24 at 5 p.m.
  • SLICE’s next workshop series will be How to Communicate Leadership to an Employer. The presenter will be Chuck Crocker and will take place March 31 from 1-3 p.m. in SSCB 3306.
  • Applications for the student leadership conference is due April 7.
  • The movie “Gleason” will be shown March 25 in the Lecture Hall at 7 p.m. The movie will be 4 dollars and free for UHCL students.
