SGA meeting – April 18, 2017

The meeting started with fund requests from student organizations.

  • Applied Behavior Analysis Student Org (ABASO) requested $2,000 in funds from SGA to attend their international convention in Denver, Colorado May 25-29. This is their second of two presentations for the fund requests. Request is temporarily approved by SGA as approval from the Dean of Students is pending.
  • Hispanics Advancing Culture, Education and Roots (H.A.C.E.R.) requested $375 in funds for their Cinco De Mayo event April 27. This is their first and only presentation. Request is temporarily approved by SGA as approval from the Dean of Students is pending.

The executive council then gave their reports.

  • University Council passed the tobacco-free campus initiative with 18 in favor, 5 against and 3 abstentions. Enforcement of the policy has not be determined.
  • Minor in Social Work and minor in Women’s and Gender Studies in the College of Human Sciences and Humanities has been passed by University Council.
  • Fund request reimbursements are now open to be turned in via the SGA website.
  • UHCL master plan open forum to be held in the SSCB Lecture Hall May 2 at 4 p.m.

The executive council proceeded to go into new business.

  • Executive Council candidates for 2017-2018 took a few minutes each to state why they wish to take one of the open SGA EC positions and answered questions.
    • President: Justin Murphy
    • Vice President – Outreach and Communication: Mohamed AbdelGilil
    • Vice President – Committee Coordinator: Esther Calderon and Diveanne Martinez
    • Vice President – Administration: Izuh Ikpeama
  • Shared Governance candidates each gave a speech and answered questions.
    • Planning and Budgeting Committee: Patrick Fetterly
    • University Life Committee: Jonathan Cantú
  • Voting for the SGA Executive Council and Shared Governance begins April 18 online and will end April 24 at noon.

The meeting ended with announcements from student organizations and general announcements.

  • Legal Studies Association will hold a mock trial April 19 as part of the 23rd Annual Student Conference for Research and Creative Arts.
  • Toastmasters provided information on the organization that includes public speaking.
  • Delta Xi Nu will take part in Free the Captives’ 3rd Annual Freedom Fest and 5K.
  • Family Therapy Student Association to hold bake sale April 25 in Atrium I from 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.
  • Campus Activity Board (CAB) is hosting yoga April 24 in the Forest Room from 5 – 7 p.m.
  • Orientation and New Students Programs will be giving away Finals Freebies April 26 in Atrium at noon or 4 p.m.
  • Bayou Theater announced upcoming events including: Improve Team-Up, The Last Laugh, Lone Star Feminist and The Revelers.
  • Film and Speaker Series will feature “Racing Extinction” and speaker George Guillen, April 22 at 7 p.m.
  • Student Leadership Banquet ticket sale and photo submission ends April 21.

The SGA special session will be held April 25 at 11:30 a.m. in the SSCB Lecture Hall to announce the winners of the SGA 2017-2018 election.
