Sociology lecture held at student conference

The Student Conference for Research and Creative Arts held a sociology lecture April 20 at 4 p.m.

The lecture covered topics such as social identity formation, body shaming, the double standards in male and female entertainers, and how society handles different gender roles.

Jessica Clakley, undergraduate, spoke about, “Cleaning Out The Closet: An Ideological Criticism of Social Identity Formation,” which covered LGBT issues and how society see them as taboo or “unnatural.”

UHCL student Cheryl J. Curtis’s presented a lecture titled “Lady Gaga and Janet Jackson Chewing the Fat: Reacting to Body Shaming.” Curtis talked about the double standard in men and women in the entertainment industry. She focused on the controversial 2004 Super Bowl halftime show, which included Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake as performers. This incident made headlines in the media, due to Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction and the large amounts of FCC complaints by viewers. Cheryl focused on the consequences which affected Janet Jackson and not Justin Timberlake, despite it being his actions that caused the wardrobe malfunction.
