With the holidays fast approaching, NRG Center is set to host the 38th annual Houston Ballet Nutcracker Market Nov. 8 – 11. The event will feature over 270 merchants offering attendees a large selection of gift ideas, apparel, toys, food and more.

“The Nutcracker Market has become a holiday tradition in which shoppers come together to make memories and discover new businesses from across the country,” said Patsy Chapman, CEO of the Houston Ballet Nutcracker Market in a press release. “There’s something truly special about watching the excitement radiate from shoppers—it’s an experience unlike any other.”

The annual event is not only a chance to shop for various holiday items but also a chance to give back to the community. Proceeds from admission and special event ticket purchases, and 11 percent of merchandise sold, goes toward the Houston Ballet Foundation, the Houston Ballet Academy and scholarship programs.

Since the Nutcracker Market got its start back in 1981, the event has raised over $63 million for the Houston Ballet. These funds have been used to award over $865,000 in scholarships and provide arts education to thousands of Houston-area students.

Every year, the Nutcracker Market has a new theme centered around the fun of the holidays. Last year’s theme was “Rockin’ and Shoppin,’” while this year’s will be “Cruising into Christmas.”

“Each year we have a new theme to highlight the Market and keep it fresh and fun,” said Wendy Wilkins Burks, 2018 Nutcracker Market chairman. “Christmas is my favorite time of the year. What could be more fun than cruising in a convertible with a cool, sunglasses-wearing Santa and his reindeers shopping for presents!”

For those who have never attended the Nutcracker Market before, Burks said the best advice includes comfortable shoes, discounted tickets and following safety policies.

“Best advice is to wear very comfortable shoes because you are going to be doing a lot of walking and shopping,” Burks said. “For safety reasons NO strollers, carts or wagons are allowed in the Market. Get there as early as possible and plan to stay till closing time. With more than 270 merchants from all over the country, there is a lot to see, touch, smell and taste. It truly is a one of a kind experience.”

Discounted general admission tickets, $18, can be purchased at Randalls, participating local Nutcracker Market merchant stores and Ticketmaster. General admission tickets will be sold for $20 at the door, cash only.
